PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochromic display element adaptable to high speed rewriting and having satisfactory responsiveness. SOLUTION: The electrochromic display element wherein a coloring layer consisting of a conductive polymer and an electrolyte layer containing a liquid electrolyte are provided between a transparent electrode and a counter electrode is characterized in that the liquid electrolyte is a liquid ionic liquid at 20°C and the coloring layer is formed by applying a liquid containing the conductive polymer onto the transparent electrode and/or the counter electrode and drying the resultant liquid.
