Apparatus and method for generating a distinct "click" signal from a input device to a computer (541) or other device. The click signal is analogous to a right or left click of a conventional computer mouse. The click signal may be generated from an optical sensor unit by lifting and putting back a finger or other object from a window (112) of the optical sensor unit (500) and by simultaneously pressing a key (537) of the computer keyboard (532).
