An organic electroluminescent element (organic EL element) which is improved in element luminescent efficiency, has sufficient operation stability and a simple constitution, and utilizes phosphorescence. This organic EL element comprises a substrate and, superposed thereon, an anode, an organic layer comprising a hole-transporting layer, luminescent layer, and electron-transporting layer, and a cathode, the hole-transporting layer being disposed between the luminescent layer and the anode and the electron-transporting layer being disposed between the luminescent layer and the cathode. The luminescent layer contains a compound represented by the following general formula (I) as a host material and further contains as a guest material an organometal complex containing at least one metal selected among ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, silver, rhenium, osmium, iridium, platinum, and gold.
