PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that lowering in combustion state caused by phase lag of ignition timing cannot be determined if combustion state is determined by using only ion current generated just after ignition, in an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: This method for determining the combustion state of the internal combustion determines combustion state by detecting in a detection period, ion current generated in a combustion chamber at the time of burning the internal combustion engine. A main combustion period is detected based on a primary ion current generated just after ignition composing the detected ion current. An auxiliary combustion period is detected based on ion current generated after annihilation of the primary ion current if at least the detected main combustion period is normal. Combustion state is determined based on the detected main combustion period if the auxiliary combustion period is shorter than a predetermined value. If the auxiliary combustion period is longer than the predetermined value, combustion state is determined based on a complete combustion period from the start of the ion current detecting period until a point of finishing time of the last auxiliary combustion period in the detection period.
