PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an increase of fuel consumption and an increase of NOx while suppressing the fluctuation of output torque. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine 1 comprises first and second ignition plugs 10a, 10b for igniting mixture gas in combustion chambers 1b. Combustion ion currents in regions of the combustion chambers in which the first and second ignition plugs 10a, 10b are mounted are detected by the first and second ignition plugs 10a, 10b, and combustion conditions with the first and second ignition plugs 10a, 10b are determined in accordance with the variation coefficients of the detected combustion ion currents. As a result, when a difference between the variation coefficients of the combustion ion currents in the first and second plugs 10a, 10b is determined to be a variation difference limiting value or greater, the ignition timing of the ignition plug in which the variation coefficient of the combustion ion current is greater is advanced to improve the combustion condition in the region of the combustion chamber 1b in which the ignition plug is mounted.
