PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which is capable of achieving high speed, high accuracy, and low cost, and usable in both a high-speed monochromatic mode and and a low-speed color mode. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus comprises: a plurality of linear color sensors for reading a document as a color image; a linear monochromatic sensor for reading the document as a monochromatic image; a monochromatic analog/digital converter which operates only on an output signal from the monochromatic sensor; a plurality of color analog/digital converters, different from the monochromatic converter, for performing analog/digital conversion on all signals outputted from the plurality of color sensors, when the output signal from the monochromatic sensor is inputted to the monochromatic analog/digital converter; and a line delay/rearrangement unit including a selector for delaying the outputs from the color analog/digital converters line by line and selecting an input in accordance with whether the document is read by forward scan or backward scan after the delay.
