PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the gain of a video signal in accordance with levels of a synchronizing signal and a luminance signal. SOLUTION: The gain control system includes; a gain control circuit 4 which varies a gain of the luminance signal outputted from a Y/C separation circuit 2; a first control means 7 which outputs a first control signal corresponding to the level of the synchronizing signal; a second control means 6 which detects the level of the luminance signal outputted from the separation circuit and outputs a second control signal corresponding to the level of the luminance signal; and a third control means 8 which adjusts a gain of a video signal of the gain control circuit in accordance with the first control signal outputted from the first control means and the second control signal outputted from the second control means, thereby performing the stable gain control operation.
