ANALYSIS OF WHEEL-RAIL NOISE

Different types of wheel noise generated by the motion of a train are detected by apparatus on the train (20). The noise types include one or more of flanging noise, squeal noise, and impact noise. A microphone (24) is located on the train to record noise from one or more wheels (21). A frequency analysis (23) of noise events that are detected by the microphone is carried out as the train is in motion. The noise events are categorised (23) as a result of the analysis, and other data such as position and speed of the train may also be recorded if squeal noise is detected for example.
