A topical pharmaceutical composition for lightening or reducing the pigmentation thereof and/or inhibiting tyrosinase in a human, comprising an effective amount of resorcinol derivative of general formula (I), wherein X is H; OR1, wherein R1 is H, (C1-C6)alkyl or aryl-(C1-C6)alkyl; OCOR2, wherein R2 is (C1-C6)alkyl, aryl-(C1-C6)alkyl or phenyl; halogen; (C1-C6)alkyl, aryl-(C1-C6)alkyl; SR3, wherein R3 is H, (C1-C6)alkyl, aryl-(C1-C6)alkyl; or NHR1, wherein R1 is defined as above; n is 0 to 3; and the dashed line is an optional double bond; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. A topical or transdermal pharmaceutical composition for treating an inflammatory disorder in a human comprising aforementioned compound. Use of this compound for the manufacture of medicaments having aforementioned indication.
