<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To acquire a desired reduced image quickly. <P>SOLUTION: Variable-length decoding processing is applied to an image data compressed with JPEG, and an orthogonal conversion coefficients are obtained (step 31). Then, a resolution (magnitude) of the compressed image data is acquired (step 32), and a part of the orthogonal conversion coefficients used in inverse transformation is determined out of the orthogonal conversion coefficients according to a target resolution of a reduced image and the acquired resolution (step 33). The determined orthogonal conversion coefficients are inverse transformed, and a first reduced image is acquired (step 34).
