PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems of image data capacity generated more than necessary as a result of scanning a reading image with resolution higher than necessary when the image is scanned with fixed reading resolution, and on the contrary, of insufficient image data capacity, or the problem of an image that is not compressed to sufficient capacity because the read image is compressed with a fixed image compression rate when the image is compressed. SOLUTION: In an image reader for determining a focusing position on the basis of an evaluation result operated from image data read by a sensor, the coarseness and minuteness of a pattern of a read image is determined from the operated evaluation result, and reading resolution set by the determined coarseness and minuteness of the image is changed.
