PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader for executing dust detecting process to detect dust adhered to a contact glass before the image reading operation. SOLUTION: The time required for dust detecting process is reduced to improve quality of an image obtained by executing the dust detecting process to detect dust adhered to the contact glass before start of the original reading operation, storing the dust adhering position to a non-volatile memory, reading the dust adhering position even when the power supply of an image reader is turned OFF during the next dust detecting process, and then executing the dust detecting process to the position or the region other than the position.
