PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat developing device capable of being smoothly recovered by detecting the defective carrying of a heat developing recording material and controlling the carrying of the heat developing recording material and a heat developing method. SOLUTION: In these heat developing device and the heat developing method, when the defective carrying of the heat developing recording material is detected in detecting the defective carrying of the heat developing recording material, a heat developing recording material present on a heat developing part is discharged in the driving state of the heat developing part, and then the heat developing part is stopped.
