PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for designing a pneumatic tire capable of greatly reducing manhours for proportionally designing tires of different sizes based on a reference tire. SOLUTION: The grounding length ratio and the grounding pressure dispersion value of the reference tire are defined as input values for optimization computation (4), and a design variable to impart a variation to a tire constitution of a proportionally designed tire, a target function related to the grounding length ratios for the reference tire and the proportionally designed tire, and restricting conditions related to the grounding pressure dispersion value are defined (5). Using an FEM model for the proportionally designed tire, the grounding length ratio and the grounding pressure dispersion value for the proportionally designed tire are determined. By optimization computation, under consideration of the restricting conditions, the value of the design variable to impart the optimum value of the target function is determined in such a way that the grounding length ratio of the proportionally designed tire is closer to that of the reference tire (8-10).
