An active matrix substrate capable of reducing a capacity formed at the intersection between a scanning line and a signal line without increasing a wiring resistance and lowering the drive capability of a switching element, and a display unit provided with it. The active matrix substrate comprises a substrate, scanning lines formed on the substrate, an insulation film covering the scanning lines, signal lines crossing the scanning lines via the insulation film, a switching element formed on the substrate to operate in response to a signal applied to a corresponding scanning line, and a pixel electrode electrically connectable to a corresponding signal line via the switching element. The insulation film is a multilayer insulation film containing a first insulation layer and a second insulation layer. The first insulation layer is formed of an insulation material containing an organic component, and the multilayer insulation film has a low laminate area not formed with the first insulation layer in at least part of an area overlapping the switching element (14).
