<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas sensor for suppressing the detachment of an electrode protective layer, while restraining the shift in the λ-point and precisely controlling the combustion, and to provide its manufacturing method. <P>SOLUTION: A sensor element 2 of the gas sensor 1 is formed with a detection electrode layer 26 and an inner electrode layer 27 in a solid electrolyte 28. Among them, the detection electrode layer 26 is coated by an electrode protective layer 100. The layer 100 is a porous material for carrying catalyst metal particles, such as platinum and includes a detection electrode side region 110, having the ratio for the quantity of the carried catalyst metal particles of 0.005 wt% or lower (excludes 0), and a surface-side region 117 disposed nearer to the surface side than to the detection electrode side region 110, and having the ratio for the quantity of the carried catalyst metal particles of 0.01 wt% or higher. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
