PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent contouring artifacts inside an image displayed by a display having a bit-depth less than the bit-depth of the image. SOLUTION: The display having a bit-depth less than the bit-depth of the image utilizes a dithering pattern generated based on spatial modulations for the purpose of a Bit Depth Extension (BDE) technique for preventing contouring artifacts within the displayed image. The dithering pattern can be made to base on an achromatic-visual model or spatio-chromatic visual model. The dithering pattern is formed by shaping a pseudo-random noise signal by an equivalent noise visual model based on an array of pixels.
