This invention relates to an indanone herbicidal composition comprising a compound having the general formula (See Fig. I) or (See Fig. II) wherein Y is an oxygen atom or a hydrazono group, R is alkyl or substituted alkyl, X is a hydrogen atom or is one to three substituents independently selected from the group consisting of halo, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, alkyn yl, haloalkyl, haloalkenyl, haloalkynyl, alkoxy, alkythio, alkylsulfonyl, alkylsulfi nyl, phenyl, phenalkyl, phenalkenyl, phenalkynyl, cyano, haloalkoxy, 1,3-dioxalan-2-y l, hydroxyimino and nitro, and an agronomically acceptable carrier. The invention also discloses a method of use of these compositions.
