PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance reliability in a magnetic recording medium, and to realize high recording density and a high transfer rate in a magnetooptical recording medium. SOLUTION: This recording medium has at least a first magnetic layer which is a perpendicular magnetic film, a second magnetic layer, a third magnetic layer, and a fourth magnetic layer layered in this order, and a space layer formed between the third magnetic layer and the fourth magnetic layer, which cannot be mutually exchange-coupled. The fourth magnetic layer forms recording magnetic domains by static magnetic coupling, when magnetic domains beyond a certain size in the third magnetic layer are formed.
