PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus with a decreased driving voltage by forming barrier walls on a substrate, the barrier walls having a cross section to produce a non-uniform distance between substrates in a display cell. SOLUTION: The image display apparatus is equipped with an image display panel having one or more kinds of image display media (3W, 3B) sealed between two opposing substrates 1, 2 at least one of which is transparent and displaying an image by moving the image display media by an electric field produced within the substrates. In this apparatus, the barrier walls 11 formed on the substrate 1 to segment display cells are structured in such a manner that the cross section of the barrier walls 11 comprises a rectangular part 12 and an inclined part 13 so as to form a narrow gap between substrates in a part of the display cell by the inclined part 13 and to enhance the electric field in this part to decrease the driving voltage.
