PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographing apparatus with an inexpensive configuration capable of carrying out display on its own liquid crystal display apparatus while outputting a video signal to an external display apparatus adopting a different display standard. SOLUTION: The apparatus includes: a step 108 of setting the frequency of an operating clock signal supplied from a clock generator to the frequency of the PAL system when a television receiver connected to the photographing apparatus is set to the PAL system; and a step 110 of setting a selector to the PAL system so that the selector selects composite image data and inputs the selected data to a digital encoder, and selects character data and inputs the selected data to an LCD controller. The LCD controller converts the character data into a display signal of the PAL system and supplies the resulting signal to an LCD, displays the image data on the LCD, and the digital encoder and a D/A converter convert the composite image data into a video signal of the PAL system, supplies the video signal to a video output terminal and displays the character data on the television receiver.
