Process for the preparation of meta- or para-substituted alpha-arylalkanoic acids of formula (I) comprises the following steps: a) transformation of compounds of formula (II) into compounds of formula (III), b) thermal rearrangement of compound (III) to give compound (IIIb), c) catalytic hydrogenation of (IIIb) to give (IIIc) and d) transformation of (IIIc) into compound of formula (I). The invention also relates to compounds of formula (III) and (IIIb).
