<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small variable optical attenuator which can preferably control light quantity and to provide an optical filter equipped with the same. <P>SOLUTION: The variable optical attenuator includes: optical fibers 101, 107 on an incident side and on an emission side; a liquid crystal polarization rotator element 105 that includes a liquid crystal layer 105c sandwiched between a pair of front substrate 105a and back substrate 105b and capable of controlling rotation of a polarization direction by controlling a birefringence characteristic of the liquid crystal, which is controlled by controlling alignment of the liquid crystal layer 105c; and a Savart plate disposed between the incident side and emission side optical fibers 101, 107 and the liquid crystal polarization rotator element 105. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
