PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve torque responsiveness during acceleration, which is restricted by a mechanistic delay of one of two variable valve systems. SOLUTION: A target angle tVTC of a second variable valve system is calculated from a dynamic target volume efficiency tηV as a target load and an engine speed Ne and an actual angle arVTC is estimated in consideration of its delay. With reference to a first multidimensional variable valve system target angle setting map mpVEL26 mapping a known relationship among an operating angle VEL, a center angle VTC, the engine speed Ne, and a produced load, namely, a volume efficiencyηV, a value for a first variable valve system target angle tVEL by which the target volume efficiency tηV is obtained is searched under an actual angle equivalent value arVTC. Thus, torque responsiveness is improved. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
