PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an on-line roll grinder having a simple structure with which the formation of ground steps having steep slant is dissolved when grinding and removing the ruggedness in places where sheet-passage marks are formed and to provide a grinding method of the rolling roll. SOLUTION: In this on-line roll grinder and the grinding method of the rolling roll using the same, a rotary grindstone is made into an ellipse in the operating surface of an abrasive grain layer which is opposed to the roll surface and mounted to a supporting beam which is fixed to the housing of a rolling mill movably back and forth and also the movement in the direction of the roll axis is controlled with the supporting beam when grinding the roll surface.
