To monitor the quality of sprayed coatings, a digital camera (6) provides images of the in-flight particles or droplets for display and to be processed or evaluated by a computer program. The particle/droplet flight path (4) from the spray (2) is lit by a lamp (10) wholly or partially, with the camera field of view (12) aligned at an illuminated measurement zone (14) in the light beam (8). The illumination time is set to give an assembly of particles/droplets in the image.
