The system for use when extinguishing a flame on a gas torch fed with fuel and oxidant gases, involves maintaining the gas flow at a mean speed of about (22) m.s-1 or above by injecting a compensating gas, preferably an oxidant gas, in advance of the nozzle. The injection of the compensating gas is started after halting the feed of the fuel and/or oxidant gas to the nozzle, with a delay of not more than (1) - (5) sec, and preferably below (0.5) sec, between the two operations. The fuel gas is acetylene, 'Crylene' (RTM), 'Tetrene' (RTM) or propana, and the oxidant gas is oxygen or air. The torch used has fuel and oxidant gas feed pipes (1',2') and a system (8,8',9) for injecting a compensating gas in advance of the nozzle (7). The injection system is situated after the fuel gas regulating system (3,4,5), and in a variant can incorporate a by-pass pipe between the fuel gas and oxidant gas feed pipes.
|
