<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display for attaining high image quality of a wide visibility angle and high contrast by effectively preventing occurrence of display inferiority in the liquid crystal display dividing one pixel into a plurality of sub-dot regions. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display sandwiches a liquid crystal layer 50 between a pair of substrates 10 and 25. The liquid crystal layer 50 contains a liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy displaying vertical orientation by initial alignment, and forms a pixel electrode 31 and a counter electrode 9 for driving the liquid crystal in the side of a liquid crystal layer 50 of the pair of the substrates respectively. An upper substrate 25 comprises a plurality of island-like parts 31a-31c, the pixel electrode 31 having connection parts 39 and 39 connected electrically between the island-like parts 31a-31c, and shading parts 33a and 33b superposed planarly with the connection parts 39 and 39. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
