FIELD: organic chemistry, more particularly preparation of polycyatic diol-pentacuclo (<EMI ID=0.71 HE=6 WI=48 TI=CHI>)tetradecandiol-6,9 of formula I: <EMI ID=0.72 HE=27 WI=36 TI=CHI> and polycarbonate, polyamine and polyamide polymers. SUBSTANCE: method comprises reacting binor-s with water in the presence of palladium-containing catalyst. Water is reactant and medium. Reaction is carried out at 180 C for 6 hours. Yield of diol is about 100%. EFFECT: higher yield of the desired product, fewer stages and shorter reaction time, reduced material expenses and lower energy consumption. 1 tbl
