A method for controlling a population of target aquatic pest microorganisms in an aquatic environment infested with the target aquatic pest microorganisms by adding to water infested with the aquatic pest microorganisms an effective amount of at least one aquacidal compound selected from the group consisting of: (a) quinones, (b) naphthalenediones and (c) anthraquinones, where the aquacidal compound has the chemical structure of formula (I).
