A method and apparatus for carrying out a malting process on a mass of grain within a vessel 1 are disclosed. The apparatus includes a series of stripping plates 18 of incrementing height for moving grain towards a hopper 9 at the centre of the vessel, and means 10 for lifting grain from the hopper to an elevated discharge point 24. Loading arms 25 aid redistribution of the elevated grain onto the grain mass. The apparatus can be used for any stage of the malting process.
