A gaming machine and method for playing the machine are disclosed. The method includes a player placing a wager, after which the machine displays a matrix to be filled with symbols, and also displays a randomly chosen target symbol outside the matrix. The matrix is then randomly populated with symbols, all those which match the target are retained. The unmatched symbols are replaced and again all matching symbols are retained. The replacement step is repeated a number of times before an ultimate award is assessed as a function of the number of symbol matches.
