A substantially purified or isolated nucleic acid encoding a glutathione peroxidase homolog (CSA) and its polypeptide from a ryegrass (Lolium) species are described. Vectors and plant cells comprising the nucleic acid are described. The nucleic acid can be introduced into a plant to modify plant tolerance to environmental and/or osmotic stress, to modify a plants capacity to survive salt shock, to modify compartmentalization of sodium in a plant, to modify sodium ion influx or efflux, to modify plant recovery after exposure to salt stress, to modify plat metabolism under salt stress, or can be used as a molecular marker.
