A vegetation pruning device 2 comprises a pair of arms 4, 6 adapted to pivot relative to each other about an axis to adjust the angle between them, and at least one handle portion 14, 16 adapted to be gripped by a user. The device also includes a motor having a rotary output drive (not visible in this view), and an endless flexible cutting element 8 mounted to a first arm, which is driven by the rotary output drive. At least one detector device (not shown) is provided for detecting vegetation gripped between a second arm and the cutting element, and at least one deactivation device (not shown) is provided for deactivating the motor in response to failure of the or each detector device to detect vegetation gripped between the second arm and the cutting element.
