Pre- and post-treatment system and method for periphyton filtration using ozone

A method of treating water is comprised of exposing the water influent comprising water to ozone in sufficient quantity to disrupt the cell walls of undesired micro-organisms, thereby releasing nutrients from within the micro-organisms in a form amenable to bioassimilation, the ozone being provided in sufficient quantity to oxidize toxic, humic and tannic compounds to a form amenable to bioassimilation. The method also includes contacting aquatic plants with the ozone-exposed water where by the aquatic plants mediate the removal of the released and oxidized nutrients.
