A spring system 20 for relatively displacing elements attached to end mounts 100,110 of a rod assembly is disclosed. The assembly includes a housing 50 with a rod member 30, and a first spring 120 surrounded by a second spring 122 for biasing the rod member towards an extended or retracted position. The two springs are of different lengths and have a different wire diameter and/or winding direction. The springs are compressed for different periods of time during the movement of the rod between fully extended and retracted positions, leading to a non-linear load vs deflection curve for the spring system.
