PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide work chuck device and method, preventing a work from being damaged by the chucking operation. SOLUTION: This work chuck device 10 includes: a pair of holding parts 11, 12 holding a work W; an elastic member 16 for energizing the paired holding parts in the direction of holding the work; and cylinders 14a, 14b having cylinder rods 15a, 15b abutting on the paired holding parts to move the cylinder rods forward and backward, wherein in the case of releasing holding of the work, the cylinders move the paired holding parts to the opposite side to the energizing direction of the elastic member.
