PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contact material made of stainless steel showing low contact resistance even after a long period of use under moist atmosphere. SOLUTION: The contact material uses stainless steel 1 containing Cu; by 1.0 mass% or more and Cr; by 9 mass% percent or more, with a Cu-rich phase dispersed in a matrix in a ratio of 0.2 volume% as a base material, and a Ni-plated payer 3 with a film thickness of 0.05 to 0.7μm is formed on the surface of the base material. In place of the Cu-rich phase, a Cu-dense layer with a mass ratio of Cu/(Si+Mn) of 0.5 or more can be formed on a polar surface layer to make up a contact material maintaining a low contact resistance.
