Compounding of scrap containing plastic with other ingredients involves mixing carrier substances and additional compounding ingredients into scrap during agglomeration

During an agglomeration process for the scrap material additional ingredients are added to the melt together with carrier substances. Adhesion between the melt and additional ingredients is enhanced by the carrier substances and prevents separation during further processing. Carrier substances include: a) solid polymers and/or elastomers, with softening or melting points similar to those of the plastic containing scrap material or b) natural and/or synthetic oligomers, wax-like compounds or mixtures of these with melting range of 80-150[deg]C. Carrier substances can be used individually or in a premixed condition. Additional ingredients and carrier substances either individually or in a premixed condition are metered either together or one after the other with the plastic-based scrap into the agglomerator. Additional ingredients and carrier substances are fed to the agglomerator at a point at which the granulation or agglomeration of the scrap commences or has already started. Carrier substances in a fluid condition, e.g. a suspension, dispersion, emulsion or dissolved in the fluid, can be mixed either individually or together with premixed additional ingredients into the scrap material or metered into the agglomerator with the scrap. Carrier substances in their various forms may be used, which, during agglomeration chemically crosslink due to the frictional heat or externally supplied heat and/or subsequent heat and/or radiation treatment, to form macromolecular compounds. Primary products, carrier substances, scrap or recycled materials are combined in suitable mixing ratios.
