The decentralized, intelligent control unit has a microcontroller (30) for producing control signals for a reversible support system (33). It has a power supply (20) for components of control unit (10). It has an energy storage system (21) to supply power to support system. An interface for data link (11) for a central controller is also present. Power electronics components (22) are also present for control. The microcontroller also processes the motor vehicle crash relevant data in case the motor vehicle is involved in a crash. The unit also has an interface for a data link for the control device of vehicle-occupant safety system. An INDEPENDANT CLAIM is also included for control equipment with control unit.
