PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element with excellent moisture resistance without using a sealing cap, especially, a thin, lightweight and low-cost EL element applicable to a top-emission type capable of taking out emission light from the side of a sealing base material. SOLUTION: In the organic electroluminescent element made by laminating at least a positive electrode layer 2, an organic luminous medium layer 3, and a negative electrode layer 4, a moisture-absorbing layer 5 is to be formed inside an adhesive layer 6 so as to surround the organic luminous medium layer, and at least either of the base materials 1, 7 pinching the adhesive layer is to be of a material having translucency.
