PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multistage automatic transmission having less number of clutches in an automatic transmission for a vehicle provided with a main shaft and a counter shaft. SOLUTION: This automatic transmission for the vehicle is provided with a group of first driving gears fixed to a tubular auxiliary main shaft provided concentrically and rotatably with the main shaft, a group of first driven gears provided rotatably on the counter shaft, meshing with the group of first driving gears always, and connected selectively with the counter shaft, a first clutch for power-connecting and disconnecting the main shaft and the tubular auxiliary main shaft, a group of second driving gears provided rotatably on the main shaft and connected selectively with the main shaft, a group of second driven gears shaft, fixed to the tubular auxiliary counter shaft provided concentrically and rotatably with the counter shaft, and meshing with the group of second driving gears always, and a second clutch for power-connecting and disconnecting the counter shaft and the tubular auxiliary counter shaft.
