PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively improve the engine startability using a variable compression ratio mechanism. SOLUTION: The variable compression ratio mechanism is provided to enable changing the engine compression ratio. In the normal operation of the engine, a target compression ratio is set corresponding to the engine operation conditions (step 7, step 8). While the engine stops at receiving the engine stop signal (step 4), the target compression ratio is forcibly switched to a compression ratio for starting suitable for the engine starting (step 6).
