<p>The invention relates to a gene coding for a polypeptide with an ?-carrageenase activity in other words an enzyme for degradation of carrageenans. The invention further relates to a method for production of said polypeptide in recombinant form by use of genetic techniques and said gene and also the use of said recombinant polypeptide for the degradation of polysaccharides of the carrageenan type to give oligosaccharide fractions.</p>
