Diode laser has at least a laser diode (2), with a photo- sensitive protection element (4) connected in parallel with it and mounted on a common base board. The ohmic resistance of the protection element is adjusted dependent on the intensity of laser radiation emitted at the rear side of the laser diode and incident on a photo-sensitive area (10) of the protection element. The resistance of the protection element is controlled so that the output power of the laser diode does not exceed a predefined upper threshold.
