PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reciprocating compressor in which seizing-up of a plunger to a cylinder is prevented, and an exact operation of the plunger is ensured even under unstable pressure condition occurring right after a start-up of the operation. SOLUTION: The reciprocating compressor comprises a driving piston 2 and a free plunger 1. A compression chamber R1 is provided on one side of the free plunger 1, and a back-pressure space R2 is provided on the other side. The compressor chamber R1 is allowed to communicate with a conduction path L1 of a pressure control gas, and is controlled so as to have always higher pressure than that in the back-pressure space R2. The free plunger 1, while remaining in close contact with the driving piston 2 due to pressure of the compression chamber R1, follows the movement of the driving piston 2 in the direction to contract/expand the capacity of the compression chamber R1 to discharge/suck the gas from/into the compression chamber R1.
