PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of determining a type of an optical disk further rapidly determining the type of the loaded disk by varying the type determination sequence of the optical disk by taking the user's pattern of using the optical disk, a frequency and a point of time of using the optical disks by the types into consideration. SOLUTION: The method of determining the type of the optical disk includes steps of: reading the priority for the type determination of the optical disk in order to determines which type the loaded optical disk belongs to among the types of a plurality of the loaded optical disks saved in the memory included in the data recording and/or reproducing apparatus; and determining the type of the optical disk by controlling a read/write section of the data recording and/or reproducing apparatus by the priority.
