PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve thermal efficiency by making ignition timing appropriate. SOLUTION: This engine includes a main combustion chamber 2 changing volume by up and down motion of a piston 5 and a subsidiary chamber 15 communicating to the main combustion chamber 2 through a communication hole 18. Air fuel mixture introduced into the subsidiary chamber 15 through the communication hole 18 by rise of the piston 5 is ignited and burned, and flame is transmitted to and burns air fuel mixture in the main combustion chamber 2. The engine is equipped with a variable compression ratio mechanism 20 capable of varying engine compression ratio.
