PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and securely detect the kind of a recording medium. SOLUTION: A recording medium kind detecting unit 4 is provided with a light emitting part 42, a positive reflection light receiving part 43, and a diffusion light receiving part 44, so that the kind of the recording medium 3 is specified. In a roller rotation detecting means 48, when a cam 47 is driven to rotate by move of the recording medium 3 in the paper feeding direction, a movable piece 48c is curved backward to get in contact with a contact point 48r. When the cam 47 is driven to rotate by move of the recording medium 3 in the extracting direction, the movable piece 48c is curved forward to get in contact with a contact point 48l. When energization of the recording medium kind detecting unit 4 toward the surface of the recording medium 3 is released, the movable piece 48c is separated from the contact point 48r by its elastic force.
