<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display in which an aperture ratio can be increased while keeping high viewing angle characteristics in a structure of driving a liquid crystal by a lateral electric field. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display has a liquid crystal layer 42 disposed between a pair of substrates 40, 41 and is characterized in that; one or more pixel electrodes 54 and a common electrode 53 which functions together with the pixel electrode to apply an electric field in the direction along the substrate surface on the liquid crystal, are laid to form a plurality of pixel regions 59 on the opposing face of one substrate; a conductive black matrix 71 is disposed on the opposing face of the other substrate, the black matrix 71 having an aperture 70 corresponding to the display region of each pixel region and covering a non-display region excluding the pixel region; and the black matrix is controlled to be in an almost equal potential to that of the common electrode.
